There are two vital components needed for improving your Pokémon: stardust and candy. Here are some tips on how to amass the two things, and how to use them.
1. Stardust
This is awarded when you catch Pokémon. You get 100 units of Stardust whenever you catch a Pokémon, regardless of you've caught them before or not. So whenever you see a Pokémon, catch it. Even if it's a 10CP Rattata, it's worth using a Pokéball, as the stardust really adds up.
Stardust is used to power up Pokémon, which improves their combat power (CP) and health points (HP). But you'll also need Candy.
2. Candy
Candy comes in different flavours, and each corresponds to a certain Pokémon class. You receive candy when you catch Pokémon, and is used to evolve Pokémon. You are also awarded candy when you transfer Pokémon to the professor. As with the stardust, this is why it is a good idea to catch all the Pokémon you come across. You might end up with a sack full of Drowzees, but transferring them to the professor will give you candy to evolve one into the much stronger Hypno.
Let me know if this helps!
